Axis 20, 40, and 90 cleaning procedure
If you are receiving a stall error on your Axis or your Axis needs a cleaning you can watch the video below.
How to Disassemble and Clean Your Axis Pumps
If you prefer, you can follow the step-by-step instructions below to fully disassemble and clean your Axis pumps. This process ensures each component can be properly cleaned and maintained for optimal performance.
Axis 20
1. Remove the Lower Cage
-
Carefully pry the lower cage away from the three locking tabs located on the sides of the motor body.
-
It should not take much effort; once two tabs are unhooked, the cage will release.
2. Remove the Impeller
-
After the cage is removed, the impeller cover will be visible.
-
Be cautious when removing this piece; there is a small bearing inside the cap that can either fall out or remain attached to the front of the impeller.
-
Grab the cover by the inner diameter and gently pull it out of the pump. You may need to shimmy it out as it’s a tight fit.
-
Remove the impeller from the internal shaft.
Cleaning: This full disassembly allows you to submerge all parts of the motor in either:
-
A 50/50 hot water and vinegar solution, or
-
A citric acid solution.
Removing the Impeller: Once the cage is removed, the impeller cover will be visible. Be careful when removing this piece, as there is a small bearing on the inside of the cap that has the potential to fall out or stay on the front side of the impeller (Shown in the 2nd picture below). Grab the cover by the inner diameter and carefully pull it out of the pump, you may need to shimmy this out, as it is a tight fit. The impeller can then be removed from the internal shaft.
This full disassembly will ensure that all pieces of the motor are able to be properly submersed in a solution of 50/50 hot water and vinegar, or in a solution of citric acid.
Axis 40 and 90
1. Remove the Lower Cage
-
Carefully pry the lower cage from the three locking tabs located on the sides of the motor body.
-
Once two tabs are unhooked, the cage should release easily.
2. Remove the Impeller
-
With the cage removed, the impeller cover will be visible.
-
Grab the cover by the inner diameter and gently pull it out, shimmy if needed.
-
The impeller will now be visible and can be removed easily.
Notes & Tips
-
If the bearing comes out of the motor with the impeller, this is completely normal. It can be reinstalled using your fingers or a small tool like a screwdriver.
-
The bearing has two sides:
-
Smooth side → Faces into the rubber gasket.
-
Notched side → Faces the impeller.
-
-
You may see black residue on the impeller shaft. This is from the internal bearing and is completely normal. It helps reduce friction and ensures smooth rotation.
Final Step: Cleaning & Reassembly
-
Submerge all motor components in either a 50/50 hot water and vinegar solution or a citric acid solution to remove buildup.
-
Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
-
Reassemble the unit, ensuring the teal feet are properly installed.
