How do I update the New Controller on a Mac?

The following procedure will upgrade firmware on Aqua Illumination's New Controller using Mac OSX.

  1. Download the latest firmware from
    • Make a note of where the file is being saved on your computer.
  2. Plug your New Controller into a USB port on your Mac.
  3. Once the New Controller has booted up, select Menu->More...->Firmware Update
  4. Select 'OK' to on the Firmware Update dialog.
    • The controller will reboot into firmware update mode.
  5. Open a terminal.
  6. Go to Mac OSX's "Spotlight" and type "Terminal".
  7. In the terminal type 'mount'.
    • Example output:
      user$ mount
      /dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
      devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
      map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
      map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
      /dev/disk1 on /Volumes/AQUA_ILLUMN (msdos, local, nodev, nosuid, noowners)
  8. In the output, look for 'AQUA_ILLUM' (highlighted in red). Make a note of this path.
  9. In the terminal type: 
  10. dd conv=notrunc if=<PATH_TO_DOWNLOADED_FILE> of=<PATH_TO_AQUA_ILLUM>/firmware.bin
    • Where <PATH_TO_DOWNLOADED_FILE> is the path to the firmware downloaded in step 1.
    • Where <PATH_TO_AQUA_ILLUMN> is path in step 6.
    • Example: 
    • user$ dd conv=notrunc if=/Users/user/Downloads/new-controller_1.1.8.bin of=/Volumes/AQUA_ILLUMN/firmware.bin
  11. In OSX's Finder, eject the 'AQUA_ILLUMN' device.
  12. Unplug and plug back in the controller to reset it.
  13. You should see the AI splash screen.
  14. Select Menu->More...->Firmware Update to verify the version of firmware.
  15. Cancel out of the Firmware Update dialog.
